Abstract
This document explains how to create an alternate hierarchy and then use it in reports.
Scenario
There is a requirement that business wants to look at the data in a different hierarchy than the one
that is coming from ECC. So, this means, that business needs an alternate hierarchy on which they can
view reports.
Introduction to Alternate Hierarchies
Two types of hierarchies exist in the system namely, Standard and alternate hierarchy. Standard
hierarchies represent the organizational structure of an organization. On the contrary, alternate
hierarchies is a grouping created only for reporting purpose. So, according to these user defined
groupings we can create an alternate hierarchy and report on that.
How to create an alternate hierarchy in BPC web interface
Here we will create an alternate hierarchy in profit center dimension.
Step1: Add hierarchy in web
Go to interface Edit Structure ”Add” in the hierarchy panel
Step 2: Hierarchy name
Give the hierarchy name OK
Step3: Maintain members
Go to maintain members and firstly create parent text nodes.
A sample parent PCG_H2 is created in this case.
Assign this as a parent for some base nodes as shown below:
Now in the hierarchy view you will be able to view 2 hierarchies H1 and H2 as shown below:
Select H2 and you will be able to see hierarchy that you have just created by assigning PCG_H2 as
parent
How to select this Hierarchy in Report:
Login to EPM excel interface and create a report using profit center
Go to EPM member selector and there you will able to select your hierarchy H2and view reports on
the basis of an alternate hierarchy.
Conclusion
Alternate hierarchies are very helpful for business when they want to analyze reports on the basis of
some user defined or functional groups. This can be achieved using alternate hierarchies.
